Carat vs Millimeters: How Big Will Your Gemstone Really Look?
You find a gemstone you love. The listing says “5 carats.” But will it look big on a ring? Will it fit your setting? Carat weight does not answer these questions. Millimeters do.
This guide shows real sizes from our current catalog, so you can see what a stone will look like before you buy it.

Why Carat Weight Can Mislead You
Carat measures weight, not size. Two stones can weigh the same and look very different, for three reasons.
1. The Stone Type Changes the Size
Some gemstones are denser than others. A denser stone weighs more for its size, so at the same carat weight it looks smaller. Tourmaline is denser than quartz, which includes amethyst and citrine.
Here is proof from our own listings:
- Our 5.05 ct amethyst measures 11.34 x 11.23 mm
- Our 5.71 ct lagoon tourmaline measures 10.10 x 9.36 mm
The tourmaline is heavier, yet it is the smaller stone. If you want the biggest look for your money, quartz stones give you the most size per carat.
2. The Cut Changes the Look
A shallow stone looks wider from above. A deep stone hides its weight below the surface. Long shapes, like baguettes and long cushions, look different again.
- Our 1.00 ct bluish green tourmaline (baguette) measures 6.38 x 5.53 mm
- Our 1.00 ct lagoon tourmaline (cushion) measures 5.43 x 4.87 mm
Same weight, different footprint.
3. Depth Counts Too
The third number in a listing is depth. A stone that is too deep can sit high on a ring. Always check all three numbers.

A tip: print a ruler, or hold a ruler to your finger. Look at the width in millimeters and picture it on your hand.
Which Size Fits Which Piece of Jewelry?
These are general starting points, not rules. Your jeweler can advise on your exact design.
Earrings
Stones between about 5 and 9 mm look balanced on most ears. Smaller stones suit daily wear. Larger stones make a statement.
Browse matched sets in our Gemstone Pairs collection.
Pendants
Pendants can carry much larger stones, because the weight rests on a chain instead of a finger. A stone of 10 mm or more makes a clear focal point.
Rings
- Small and delicate: about 5 to 7 mm wide
- Standard center stone: about 8 to 11 mm
- Statement or cocktail ring: 12 mm and up
Think about hardness too. For a ring worn daily, tourmaline, garnet, topaz, spinel, and aquamarine are strong choices. Amethyst rates 7 on the Mohs scale, so use a protective setting for larger stones.

How to Get the Biggest Look for Your Budget
If size matters most, follow these three steps.
- Choose a stone with strong size per carat. Amethyst and other quartz stones give you the most width for the price. For example, our 26.96 ct pink purple amethyst is listed at $120, about $4.45 per carat.
- Look for a wide, shallow shape. A stone with a larger footprint looks bigger from above.
- Compare millimeters, not carats. Open two listings side by side and compare the first two numbers.
If rare color matters more than size, choose tourmaline or spinel, and accept a smaller stone. See Best Natural Gemstones for $300 and Under for real prices.
A Note on Moissanite
Moissanite is lab-grown, and it is lighter than diamond. That means a moissanite of the same carat weight looks slightly bigger than a diamond. Our white moissanite stones are sold as lab-grown, and each listing says so clearly.
Your Pre-Purchase Size Checklist
Before you buy any loose gemstone, check these five things.
- Millimeter size matches your setting. Ask your jeweler for the exact measurement they need.
- Depth is not too tall for your design.
- Shape suits the piece (a long stone for a bar pendant, a round stone for a solitaire).
- Hardness matches how often you will wear it.
- Treatment and clarity are listed clearly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a bigger carat weight always a bigger stone?
No. Carat is weight. A denser stone can weigh more and still look smaller than a lighter stone. Always check the millimeter size.
What mm size is a 1 carat gemstone?
It depends on the stone and the cut. In our catalog, 1.00 ct tourmalines range from about 5.4 to 6.4 mm in length, depending on shape.
Which gemstone looks biggest for the carat weight?
Quartz stones, such as amethyst and citrine, usually look larger per carat than denser stones like tourmaline.
What size stone should I choose for earrings?
Many buyers choose between 5 and 9 mm. Start with a matched pair so both sides are the same.
How do I know if a stone fits my ring setting?
Give your jeweler the exact millimeter dimensions from the listing. They size the setting by those numbers.
Can I exchange a stone if the size looks wrong?
Yes. Every order includes a 14-day exchange guarantee.
